STEM Education Advisory Committee
Vision:
Consistent with the vision described in Project Making the Grade, the STEM EAC will promote and support systemic, scaleable and sustainable initiatives that advance:
- Student inspiration to learn and preparation to work in Rhode Island’s innovation driven, 21st century society,
- Continuous and rigorous preparation, professional development and recruitment of high quality teachers prepared to deliver relevant and engaging, standards-aligned curriculum through student-centered, inquiry-based instruction,
- Collaboration among public and private higher education faculty, PK-12 teachers and administrators, business and industry leaders, specialized education programs, and state government departments to maintain the collective engagement and commitment of key stakeholders as we turn ideas into action.
- An active and engaged community that advocates for continuous improvement in learning, equitable and adequate resources for all students, and enable the representation of families in student learning.
Mission:
Cultivate a collaborative learning and leadership community of STEM professionals to:
- Improve STEM education for the benefit and preparation of ALL students as 21st century citizens,
- Enable and encourage many more students to prepare for post-secondary STEM programs of study and careers.
Goals:
To support the implementation of Project Making the Grade, The STEM Education Advisory Committee will promote:
- Collaboration: Convene Rhode Island’s community of STEM professionals to catalyze innovative initiatives enabling educators to prepare students for new opportunities and success in the 21st century.
- Initiatives @ Scale: Evaluate existing and emerging PK-16 STEM education initiatives based on “Best Practice” criteria, including the potential to achieve systemic, scaleable and sustainable implementation; recommend and support the expansion of highly-effective effective programs.
- Communication: Create a STEM education web portal to raise awareness of current STEM activities that engage and excite students about STEM education and careers. The portal will also raise community awareness of STEM issues and trends in Rhode Island, nationally and globally.
